Panama remains a tropical getaway year-round, with temperatures never falling below the mid-70s.

Late December through the end of April is considered Panama’s dry season and the best time of year to visit weatherwise.

May to December is the country’s winter, which brings clouds and rainier weather. Along the coast, rain showers are tropical in nature (lasting only for short periods each day). Travelers who visit during the rainy season will be rewarded with fewer crowds, bigger bargains, greener landscapes, and possible humpback whale sightings.

Nothing puts you in the vacation mindset faster than a trip to the beach. It’s pretty impossible to be stressed when you have your feet in the sand, salt in your hair, and sun on your face.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go far to find your own little slice of paradise—there are some incredible beaches right here in the U.S. if you know where to look.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, releases his rankings of the best beaches in America every year.

Dr. Beach evaluates contenders on 50 categories, including sand softness, water temperature, and the number of sunny days to determine the top beaches in the country.

This year, he named St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle as his top pick, saying, “This long barrier island, far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers, and bird watchers as nature abounds.”

These are the best beaches in America, according to the list.

St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle, Florida

This remote barrier island is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Crystal clear water invites swimming, and the powder white sand only adds to the picturesque appeal.

Dr. Beach says he enjoys “beachcombing and shelling” at St George Island.

Where to Stay: There are no hotels located within the state park, but Buccaneer Inn is one of the closest places to stay—and it overlooks another lovely beach.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it draws a big number of visitors accordingly. Find some peace and quiet on the west end of Waikiki Beach at Kahanamoku Beach, which is the widest beach around—offering plenty of empty space to spread your towel.

According to Dr. Beach, “This is one of the most picturesque beaches in the USA with the iconic Diamondhead volcano in the distance.”

Where to Stay: The luxurious Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki sits on 22 acres of prime oceanfront property and even features its own saltwater lagoon overlooking Waikiki Beach.

Coopers Beach, Southampton, New York

Located in the famously tony town of Southampton, Coopers Beach earns high praise from Dr. Beach for its “grainy white quartz sand” backed by imposing sand dunes.

This beach won’t be cheap to visit—a daily parking permit costs $50 per car—but the scenery makes it worthwhile.

Where to Stay: Accommodations along Coopers Beach are primarily private homes, but the quaint 1708 House is an easy bike ride away.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida

Accessible only by boat or a 3-mile walk from Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island State Park is a truly remote escape. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters,” says Dr. Beach.

If you get bored sunbathing on the beach all day, there are also boardwalk paths to stroll and kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves to paddle.

Where to Stay: Sandpearl Resort is one of the closest hotels to the state park. This beachfront hotel sits on Clearwater Beach, a pretty stunning beach even if it’s not on the top ten list.

Lighthouse Beach, Buxton, Outer Banks of North Carolina

National Park Service

Part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Lighthouse Beach is no longer home to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse that it was named for (it moved inland due to beach erosion in 1999).

According to Dr. Beach, “This lifeguarded beach is the number one surfing spot on the US Atlantic Coast as the large offshore sandbanks, known as Diamond Shoals, cause wave refraction focusing wave energy on this beach.”

Where to Stay: Don’t let the motel part of the name deter you—Cape Hatteras Motel, located about a mile from Lighthouse Beach, has a high 4.5-star rating from reviewers, along with its own private beach.

Coronado Beach, San Diego, California

In a state that’s full of beaches, it’s hard to pick the best one in California, but Coronado Beach is something special.

“With its subtropical vegetation, unique Mediterranean climate, and fine sparkling sand, beach-goers flock to this beach for great ship-watching and the summer’s warm and mild surf,” extols Dr. Beach.

Where to Stay: The famous Hotel del Coronado is without a doubt the best place to stay on Coronado Beach. Even if you can’t afford the pricey nightly rates, it’s worth stopping in for a meal or a drink at this historic property.

Wailea Beach, Maui, Hawaii

Michael Brake | Adobe Stock

Thanks to Hawaii’s right-of-way law, all beaches in the state are open to the public below the high tide line. This benefits visitors to Wailea Beach, access to which might otherwise be restricted to guests of the Wailea resort complex along the shore.

Wailea Beach is classic Hawaii, described by Dr. Beach as a “white coral sand beach that gently slopes offshore and is great for snorkeling when the ocean is calm.“

Where to Stay: Admire the beach from the adults-only infinity pool at the five-star Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.

Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Visit Historic Charleston

In contrast to Hawaii’s egalitarian beach access policy, South Carolina’s Beachwalker Park offers entry to the only public beach on Kiawah Island. The family-friendly beach is fully equipped with lifeguards, beach chair rentals, bathrooms, a snack bar, and a boardwalk.

Dr. Beach recommends that visitors “Bring their canoes and kayaks to paddle through the tidal inlets.”

Where to Stay: When it was built, the site of the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort was raised 20 feet to allow unobstructed ocean views from the ground floor, so you’re guaranteed to have a great panorama from practically everywhere on the property.

Poipu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach vacation, head to Hawaii, which dominates the top ten list with three of the best beaches in the US. Poipu Beach takes the ninth spot on the list, thanks to its unique geographical features, like the natural ocean wading pool that draws families to its shores.

Poipu Beach, says Dr. Beach, is “actually two beaches in one. A tombolo, which is a narrow sand spit that extends from the shore to an island, separates the two pocket beaches.”

Where to Stay: Villa-style accommodations at Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club offer plenty of space (and important beach amenities like a washer/dryer and full kitchen) for guests to spread out.

Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

People on Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with surfer in the water heading towards the beach.
National Park Planner

Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Coast Guard Beach features a stretch of sand that was named “The Great Beach” by Henry David Thoreau. “The picturesque old Coast Guard station still sits atop the glacial bluffs,” says Dr. Beach, “allowing for a spectacular view of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.”

Great white shark sightings aren’t uncommon here, so keep an eye out for red flags with shark images to see if you should stay out of the water.

Where to Stay: In peak season (mid-June to Labor Day) beach parking is restricted to Eastham residents and vehicles with handicap placards. Other visitors can ride their bikes, walk, or take a short shuttle from Little Creek. The charming Inn at the Oaks is just a few minutes down the road from the shuttle pickup point.

Booking a flight ticket can feel a bit like playing the stock market. Will prices drop or skyrocket if you wait longer to buy?

Travel booking site Kayak aims to take the guesswork out of buying a plane ticket with its new Best Time to Travel tool. The site uses data from billions of travel queries to predict future flight prices and help travelers decide when the best time to go is—and when to buy for the best deal.

Online flight booking website provide modish reservation system . Travel technology concept .

How it Works

On the Best Time to Travel homepage, enter your destination and choose one of the preselected lengths of trip options (four days, seven days, or 14 days). There’s no way to filter down by airport here, only by city.

The tool will then tell you what month you should go for the best weather, the least amount of crowds, and the cheapest airfare. This can be helpful if you’re flexible on when you’re traveling, but if you have specific dates in mind, you’ll have to wait until the third step to get more customized data.

After you’ve completed step one, the tool allows you to narrow your trip down by month, and then will display the best dates to travel along with a price chart so you can see how fares fluctuate throughout the month.

Once you’ve picked the dates you want to travel, scroll down to step three, where you can plug in your exact itinerary and Kayak will show you the latest date by when you should book your flight by in order to get the cheapest price.

Can’t decide between a relaxing lakeside getaway or an active mountain vacation? Plan a trip to New Hampshire, home to the White Mountains and the Lakes Region, where you can have both in one weekend.

With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 93 state park properties, and plenty of lakes and beaches to explore, the Granite State is a paradise for outdoor adventurers.

Follow this guide to plan the perfect New Hampshire summer weekend trip.

Friday

Mount Washington Hotel exterior on left. Mount Washington Hotel room on the right.

Northern New Hampshire is an easy drive from Boston—you can save your vacation time, leave after work on Friday, and arrive in time for dinner.

Check into the Omni Mount Washington Resort, New Hampshire’s most iconic hotel. The sprawling, red-roofed property can be spotted from many viewpoints in the state. This historic resort was built in 1902 and has since undergone many renovations to make it the timelessly elegant property it is today. The most recent renovation expanded the hotel to add 69 modern rooms and suites in the Presidential Wing—book a room in this section to enjoy mountain views from your private outdoor space, oversized soaking tubs, and a brand-new feel.

The Omni’s main dining room was recently updated as well. Reserve a table by the window in this elegant space (there is a dress code) for a special dinner. The dining room’s picture windows offer stunning sunset views over the mountains and surrounding forest while you eat.

Saturday

Center Harbor Inn exterior on left, Center Harbor Inn room on right.

Start your day off right with a buffet breakfast in the Omni’s main dining room, or, for lighter fare, take advantage of the Omni’s complimentary coffee service and pair a cup with a pastry (don’t miss the incredible cinnamon rolls) from the hotel’s Morsels cafe.

New Hampshire is by far the best state in New England for hiking. Experience a classic New Hampshire 4,000-footer by tackling Mount Eisenhower. Part of the White Mountains’ famous Presidential Range, this moderately challenging trek will reward you with 360-degree views at the top. The 3.3-mile (one-way) Edmund’s Path trail is the most direct route to the summit.

By the time you’ve finished the hike, you’ll be ready for a hearty lunch. Refuel at Wicked Fresh Craft Burgers in North Conway. Get the milkshake (made with local milk) and the fries (topped with fresh herbs)—you’ve earned it.

Check into the Center Harbor Inn. Perched above a private sandy beach on Lake Winnipesaukee, this hotel puts you in the heart of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. Opt for a water-view room with a private balcony for a truly luxurious stay.

Head down to the hotel’s outdoor hot tub where you can soak your tired muscles while overlooking the water.

Walk across the street to Poggio’s Craft Kitchen & Taphouse for dinner, where chef Kaylon Sweet serves up an ever-changing menu based on fresh, local ingredients. If the weather’s nice, sit outside in the restaurant’s beautiful new biergaten space.

Sunday

top: Hiking signs for different trails. bottom left: the mansion at Castle in the Clouds. bottom right: interior of the mansion with a table, couch and rug.
Castle in the Clouds

Stroll over to Gusto’s Italian Cafe for a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast. Grab a sandwich and coffee—and don’t forget to add in one of the homemade pastries involving Nutella—and bring your feast back for a picnic on Center Harbor Inn’s private beach.

After carboloading and caffeinating, rent a kayak from the hotel and paddle around Lake Winnipesaukee before checking out.

Take a short drive to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, New Hampshire. Built as a private estate in 1913, this elaborate property once spanned an incredible 6,300 acres. Now, the mansion and grounds occupy 135 acres of prime real estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.

Tour the carefully-preserved 16-room Lucknow estate for a fascinating example of how the wealthy lived in the early 20th century before having lunch in the on-site restaurants (housed in the converted stables).

Cap off your trip with a walk through Castle in the Cloud’s many scenic walking trails—the short (0.8 mile) Brook Walk trail takes you past seven beautiful waterfalls.

If you’ve ever caught a whiff of jasmine at night and been instantly transported back to a tropical trip you know that scent can be a powerful memory trigger. There’s even scientific evidence that our sense of smell is more strongly connected to our brains than other senses.

Capitalize on this knowledge (and help create special travel memories) by packing perfume for your next trip. Wearing a new fragrance for a trip can help tie that scent to a location—so every time you smell it, you’ll be flooded with positive reminiscences.

Perfume is subject to the 3-1-1 liquids rule by airport security, so it’s important to bring a travel-sized vial. (You also don’t want to worry about a full-sized version breaking in your bag).

These are the seven best travel-sized perfumes to take on your next trip.

Nateeva: St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Scentbird

What could be a more perfect perfume to pack for a tropical vacation than Nateeva’s St. Vinecnet and the Grenadines? Inspired by the island’s flora, the fragrance has notes of night-blooming jasmine, plumeria, orange flower, and violet leaf.

Find it on Scentbird, a site that specializes in travel-size perfumes. You can make one-time purchases of specific fragrances, or sign up for a subscription to get a 30-day supply of different scents sent to you each month, so you’ll have lots to choose from for your next trip.

Carnal Initiation: Initio Perfume

The Carnal and Hedonist lines of perfume from Carnal Initiation: Initio Perfume
Initio

Set the mood for your trip with Inito Parfums Prives. This high-end fragrance brand offers initiation sets that are perfectly travel-sized so that you can take its perfumes on the road.

Choose from the Carnal or Hedonist lines—both will come with a coupon to redeem the price of the set towards a purchase of any of the full-sized fragrances once you decide which one you’ve fallen for.

Vahy: Neon Neroli

Vahy

Inhale the fresh neroli, orange flower, and bergamot notes of Neon Neroli and you’ll feel like you’re lounging by the sea in Capri with this Italian-inspired perfume.

All of Vahy’s natural and vegan perfumes are made without synthetic fragrances, denatured alcohol, phthalates, parabens, or other bad stuff you might not want to spray on your skin.

Diptyque: 34 Boulevard Saint Germain Sold Perfume

Don’t want to worry about your travel-sized perfume shattering in your bag? Opt for a solid option, which you can rub on wherever you want to add scent. Diptyque’s solid perfume balm is a good choice—and if you’ve ever been to the brand’s store in Paris, you might recognize the signature scent.

Crafted with amber, patchouli, rose, cinnamon, blackcurrant, and floral notes, it’s the perfect pick for a sophisticated city trip.

Maison Margiela: Replica Beach Walk Travel Spray

Sephora

The easiest way to transport yourself to a tropical beach vacation—a spritz of Maison Margiela’s Replica Beach Walk perfume. This fresh solar scent is designed to smell like a day at the beach, complete with salty air and sunshine. Bergamot, pink pepper, and lemon keep things fresh while heliotrope, coconut milk, and musk add a touch of sweetness.

Sol de Janeiro: Brazilian Crush Cheirosa ‘68 Beija Flor

Sephora

Don’t limit your perfume to your skin—let your hair have some fun too. Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Crush Cheirosa mist was designed to be used on both hair and body (it won’t dry your hair out as regular perfumes might).

This fruity-floral scent was inspired by the sunny gardens of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with notes of Brazilian jasmine, pink dragonfruit, and vanilla.

Sephora Deluxe Mini Perfume Sampler Set

Prefer to have options for your trip rather than sticking to one scent? Sephora’s Deluxe Mini Perfume Sampler Set lets you try out six popular fragrances: Clean Reserve Skin, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia, Marc Jacobs Daisy, Nest Baliense Coconut, Phlur Missing Person, and Versace Dylan Purple.

This money-saving set includes a certificate that you can redeem for a full size of any of the fragrances in the set.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for a busy summer of travel and wants flyers to be prepared as well. Summer air travel volumes are expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels, and lines at airport checkpoints will likely be long.

To help travelers pass through airport security quickly and smoothly, the TSA has offered these seven summer travel tips

Double-Check Your PreCheck

Didn’t get the TSA PreCheck symbol on your boarding pass even though you’re a member? It’s likely that you didn’t add your Known Traveler Number to your reservation. Before checking in, make sure this information is correctly added to your profile so that you actually get PreCheck on your ticket.

Empty Out Your Bag Before Packing

Maybe the last time used your backpack was for a camping trip, and there’s a knife stashed in a pocket that you forgot about—the TSA checkpoint is not the time to discover that. Make sure your luggage is empty before you start packing it, so you don’t accidentally bring any prohibited items to the airport.

The TSA is especially concerned about people packing weapons, warning travelers, “If passengers bring a firearm to the security checkpoint, they will face significant penalties to include federal penalties and additional screening.”

Allow Extra Time

Airports are going to be really busy this summer, so you may have to wait in longer lines than you’re used to. Factor this in when you’re planning how long it will take you to return a rental car, find parking, check your bags, and get through security.

To save time during screening, the TSA recommends taking items out of your pockets and putting them in your carry-on bag rather than in bins.

Be Ready for New Technology

You may see new technology at checkpoints in airports this summer, including new CT baggage scanners. “The opening to the X-ray tunnel on a CT unit is slightly smaller than on a traditional X-ray unit,” says the TSA.  “TSA advises travelers not to force larger items into the tunnel, but to ask a TSA officer for assistance.”

Remain Calm

Crowds and delayed flights might test your patience this summer but don’t take it out on airport employees, TSA agents, or flight attendants. The TSA reminds passengers that “Assaulting a TSA officer is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest.”

Check Your Identification

Although you still won’t need a REAL ID license until 2025, you should still double-check your passport or driver’s license well before you travel to make sure that it hasn’t expired. Don’t forget that many international destinations require your passport to be valid for at least six months after your trip.

Know How to Reach the TSA

Not sure what you can bring on a plane, or what security procedures will be like? Ask the TSA before you go. You can contact the TSA through a variety of methods:

  • Social media: Message @AskTSA on Facebook or Twitter
  • Text 272872 (AskTSA)
  • Call the TSA Contact Center at (866) 289-9673
  • Passengers requesting special assistance/accommodations can call TSA Cares at (855) 787-2227

Live assistance is available on social media from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. ET and phone lines are staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekends and holidays.

You might want to increase your budget for your summer vacation—inflation has hit the travel industry.

New numbers from the Consumer Price Index by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show just how much prices have risen recently. Here’s what you can expect, along with tips for saving money.

Airfare

According to the BLS, airfares in April 2023 were an average of 9.6 percent higher than they were pre-pandemic in April 2019.

How to Save: Consider taking a road trip this summer instead. Data shows that gas prices have dropped 12.2 percent year-over-year, and rental car prices have also decreased by 11.2 percent.

Hotels/Vacation Rentals

Close up of person handing over a set of keys over a hotel front desk with a bell on it

The BLS measures inflation across a variety of accommodation options for travelers, including hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals. All of these overnight accommodation types are compiled into a category called “lodging away from home.”

Room rates for lodging away from home have risen 3.3 percent over the last year, and 23.6 percent over the last two years.

How to Save: Booked a refundable reservation? Keep an eye on rates at your hotel to see if prices drop before your arrival. If they do, you can rebook at a cheaper rate for no additional cost.

Don’t forget to search for a hotel on SmarterTravel Hotels, where we offer big discounts on properties all over the world.

Dining Out

Eating away from home, whether it’s in a fast food cafe or a fine dining restaurant, now costs 8.6 percent more than it did one year ago.

How to Save: Try not to eat every single meal out when you’re on vacation. Booking a vacation rental or hotel room with a kitchenette can make it easy to prepare a quick and inexpensive breakfast. Or, try hitting the local grocery store and picking up ingredients for a picnic in a scenic spot for a cheap (and memorable) lunch or dinner.
